Roofing in Merrylands, 2160

Merrylands is one of the larger Cumberland suburbs and it reads as three layers. Inter-war cottages on the older streets, a deep post-war belt of brick-and-tile running out toward Holroyd Gardens, and a dense band of townhouse and apartment infill that has gone up around Merrylands Road and the station in the last couple of decades.

Inter-war and post-war tile

The bulk of the suburb. Concrete tile on simple hip and gable roofs, mortar-bedded ridge capping, quad gutters, and roofs that are now somewhere between forty and ninety years old.

• Surface slurry worn off the tiles, with grit washing into the gutters.
• Lichen on the shaded faces holding moisture against the tile.
• Ridge pointing cracked by the seasonal movement of the reactive shale clays under the Cumberland Plain.

Most of these roofs are better value restored than replaced, provided the tiles themselves still take foot traffic.

Townhouse and apartment infill

Merrylands sits in the part of the basin where the Bureau most often warns for large hail through the warmer months.
