North Parramatta is where Toongabbie Creek and Darling Mills Creek meet to form the Parramatta River, on the northern edge of the Cumberland Hospital grounds. The suburb above that junction carries some of the oldest and most tightly controlled housing in western Sydney — the North Parramatta and Sorrell Street heritage conservation areas sit here, and the roofs in them are steep, complex and original far more often than not.

The three jobs that come up most

Rebedding and repointing. Mortar bedding under the ridge and hip caps is the first thing to go on an eighty- or hundred-year-old terracotta roof, and with the reactive shale-derived clays under this part of the plain working on it every season, rigid mortar will keep cracking. Flexible pointing is the correct answer here, not an upsell.

Box gutters behind additions. Almost every one of these houses has grown at the back at some point. The junction between the original roof and the addition is usually an internal box gutter, often without any overflow at all. When it backs up in a summer downpour the water goes straight into the ceiling.

Leaf load off the creek corridor. Properties backing onto the Darling Mills and Hunts Creek corridors, and anything under the mature canopy toward Lake Parramatta, fill their valleys and gutters with bark strip and eucalypt litter that mats and holds water.

Heritage first

Before a material change is even priced, it is worth knowing whether your property sits in a conservation area or is individually listed. City of Parramatta administers 18 conservation areas and consent is generally needed to alter the external appearance of a building in one. We will flag it if your street looks likely; Council confirms it.

Next door we work in Parramatta, Northmead and Oatlands. Common jobs here are roof restoration, repairs and gutter work.
